Working as a flight attendant for prestigious Middle Eastern airlines like Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, and Flydubai is a dream for many. These airlines offer competitive salaries, travel perks, and the opportunity to work in a multicultural environment. However, securing a cabin crew position requires preparation, professionalism, and an understanding of the interview process. In this article series, I’ll guide you through everything you need to know—from the interview stages to the essential documents you must prepare. As someone who has walked this path myself, I know how overwhelming the process can be, but with the right preparation, your dream of flying can become a reality.
Part 1: Understanding the interview process
The recruitment process for Middle Eastern airlines is carefully designed to identify candidates with the right mix of skills, personality, and professionalism. While each airline has its nuances, the core structure of the interview process remains similar across Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, and Flydubai.
Step-by-step breakdown of the interview process
- Online application
- Submit your application through the airline’s official careers website—www.emiratesgroupcareers.com for Emirates.
- Ensure your resume is updated, meets the airline’s specific required information, and accurately reflects your customer service or hospitality experience.
- Invitation to Assessment Day or Open Day
- Open Days: These are open-invitation events where you can show up without prior application. It’s an excellent opportunity to present yourself directly to recruiters.
- Assessment Days: These are invitation-only events for candidates who have passed the online application screening. You’ll receive an email invitation if selected.
- Company presentation
- This stage is where the recruiters introduce the airline—its values, work culture, and what to expect as a cabin crew member.
- Listen carefully, as the information shared can be helpful for the final interview. It also gives you a glimpse into the exciting and challenging lifestyle of working for a world-class airline.
- Self-introduction
- This is your first chance to make a personal impression. You’ll be asked to deliver a brief self-introduction—usually lasting 30 to 60 seconds.
- Keep it professional and concise. At this stage the recruiters will assess your English level, attention to detail, time management, communication skills, and also teamwork depending on the type of scenario you’ll get on the day. Smile, maintain eye contact, and speak clearly—it’s not just what you say but how you say it.
- Reach test
- Airlines have height requirements to ensure you can safely access onboard equipment. For Emirates, the reach test requires you to stretch to 212 cm on your tiptoes, and you must be at least 160 cm tall.
- Measure yourself at home to ensure you meet these requirements. This test is a non-negotiable part of the process, and failing it means automatic disqualification.
- Group discussion
- In this phase, you’ll be placed in small groups and presented with a scenario. The goal is to assess how you work in a team and handle real-life situations.
- Recruiters observe your communication skills, ability to listen, problem-solving approach, and how you treat others.
- Stay calm, be respectful, and speak up without dominating the conversation. It’s not about having the “right” answer—it’s about how you interact with others under pressure.
- English test
- Since English is the international language of aviation, proficiency is critical. You’ll undergo a written test assessing your grammar, comprehension, and communication skills.
- Brush up on basic grammar rules and practice reading comprehension exercises to prepare effectively.
- Final interview
- This is the most in-depth stage—a one-on-one session where recruiters will delve into your work history, customer service mindset, and motivations for becoming a cabin crew.
- Expect situational and behavioral questions such as:
- “Describe a time you went above and beyond for a customer.”
- “How would you handle a difficult passenger?”
- Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers clearly and confidently.
Every stage of the interview is intentional, crafted to uncover qualities like adaptability, cultural awareness, and grace under pressure. With the right mindset and preparation, you can shine through every step.

- Ensure your resume highlights at least one year of experience in customer service, hospitality, or a related field.
